Job Title: Associate or Assistant Pastor  

Reports to: Senior Pastor and the Church Board

Overview

Taiwanese Lutheran Church of San Diego (TLC) is a multi-generational and family-oriented church. Our church has three language services (Taiwanese, Mandarin, and English), and emphasizes gospel-centered preaching, cross-cultural missions, evangelism to the community, and discipleship through the study of God’s Word. The English Pastor will be the lead teaching pastor of the English service. As the lead teaching Pastor, his primary role of making disciples is through biblical and gospel centered preaching. He will work with the pastoral staff and elders of the other language services in guiding the church’s spiritual direction, long-term planning, and pastoral care.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Sunday service
  1. Weekly preaching expositional and gospel centered sermons at the English service, and weekly teaching biblically centered Adult Sunday School.  
  2. Providing spiritual guidance, maintaining doctrinal integrity, and ensuring all teachings and activities are biblically sound.
  3. Coordinating with worship leaders to plan meaningful gatherings that focus on glorifying God.
  4. Shepherding
  1. Shepherding and leading the English Ministry congregation, providing pastoral care, and coordinating with ministry leaders (kids, youth, adults) to plan fruitful God glorifying meetings.
  2. To be present and available to minister at all English Ministry and TLC church wide gatherings and events.
  3. Offering counseling, visitations, support in times of need, and performing funerals and weddings, in collaboration with pastors and staff.
  4. Administration
  1. To oversee and support all English ministry teams, including but not limited to small  group fellowship, outreach, caring, retreats, special meetings, mission trips, A/V,  website, etc.
  2. To help lead and coordinate all English Ministry activities, including but not limited to prayer meetings, Sunday School classes, small group bible study, retreats, and special meetings.
  3. To collaborate and support the Senior Pastor, elders, and deacons in the spiritual direction of the church.

Qualifications:

  1. Education and Ministry Experience
  1. Strongly prefer a graduate from an accredited seminary with Masters of Divinity or equivalent
  2. Theologically Reformed
  3. Experience in cross-cultural ministry or Asian-American ministry is preferred
  4. Relationship with God
  1. Excellent and growing relationship and daily walk with God
  2. Daily devotions and consistent prayer life.
  3. Clear calling from God to serve as a Pastor as described in 1 Peter 5:1-4
  4. Demonstrated Character  
  1. Testifies to the qualifications of character described in 1 Timothy 3:1-7.
  2. Not a recent convert; maintains a disciplined spiritual life and sound doctrine that exemplifies the fruit of the Spirit while also the discipling of others.
  3. Exercises self-control in decisions, is patient and longsuffering with others.
  4. Upholds high moral standards, aligning decisions and actions with God’s holiness.
  5. Not consumed with material goods, free from significant debt, and generous.
  6. Good reputation within and outside of the church
  7. Willing to submit to leaders and humbly coachable
  8. A caring heart for others and approachable by others including church members  and visitors
  9. Adaptable and resilient when confronted with barriers and setbacks
  10. If married, a spouse who shares God’s call to shepherd together and who wholeheartedly supports you in this undertaking. Maintains a healthy, biblical relationship with family. Cherishes and cares for family according to God’s Word.
  11. Passion and Competence
  1. Demonstrated ability to deliver faithful and gospel centered sermons and proficient in studying and expounding biblical texts.
  2. Demonstrated commitment to continuous personal and ministry growth.
  3. Demonstrated heart and passion to serve a diverse community (cultural/generational).
